However, you need to plan your time well to ensure you answer as many questions as you can. Some questions can be answered quickly while others may take longer. You can get yourself adequate time per question; for instance, a minute per question can work well since the NCLEX is set up so that you have a little more than one minute per question—1.3 minutes to be precise.

So as you prepare for the exam understand that there is no time limit for each question. But, allocating sufficient time for each question is good. You’ll have a maximum of 5 hours to complete the exam, which includes a basic tutorial at the start. There are optional breaks after 2 hours of testing and another optional break after 3.5 hours of testing.

Tips to pass the NCLEX in a timed environment

To become a registered nurse in the United States, you must pass the NCLEX. The test touches a wide variety of concepts such as; Anatomy, pharmacology, administration, best practices, and communicating to patient’s effects. But you also need excellent strategies and tips to tackle the entire test. Here’s how to take the timed NCLEX strategically from start to finish.

Invest in a good study guide.

Investing in a good study guide will take you closer to NCLEX excellence. Studying all the content covered in NCLEX is hugely important, and knowing the different kinds of questions you’ll see is crucial too. The NCLEX knowledge you need is covered in the Naxlex test prep.

Get 60 seconds per question.

Since the individual questions are not timed, you can allocate a minute for each question. When you take quality practice tests as well as the NCLEX itself, try to take about one minute on each question. Of course, there are some questions you can answer more quickly than that.

But understand it may take more time to answer other questions, so one minute per question is a good goal to aim for. Also, if it helps alleviate some pressure, remember that the NCLEX is set up so that you have a little more than one minute per question. Based on the total time allocated for NCLEX, you have 1.3 minutes to be exact.

Pause after 2 Minutes

The goal is to ensure you are not taking so much time on a single question. Therefore, you should avoid taking more than two minutes per question. If you have answered a series of questions in below a minute, you’ll have accumulated more extra time for harder questions—but even so, you should set a limit for each question. Two minutes is a long time, so if you can’t figure out the answer by then, you likely don’t know the answer, so moving on is better.

The questions are adaptive.

The questions you will see in your exam are adaptive to your knowledge. Meaning, that if you answer the current question correctly, the next one will be more difficult. In computer adaptive questions, the next question is randomized by the computer, so your next item will be difficult or easier.

For the multiple-choice questions, the answers are randomized by the system. So your answer option strategy should be to abandon strategizing. Focus on the options and choosing the correct one, not their order. Randomized answers can be clumpy, so don’t let that lead you down the wrong path.

Remember it’s one-way traffic.

Take time to analyze each question very carefully—once a response is submitted candidates cannot return to that question to change the earlier issued response. When analyzing a question, eliminate all the options as possible as you can, choose the best answer, and then move on.

Even if you feel evenly divided between two answers, it’s wiser to keep going through the test than to sit and worry over a single question, especially if it’s taking you more than two minutes. This is because you can’t go back and change an answer you’ve already given, so forget about the question once you move past it. Worrying and obsessing over a question you didn’t know will only distract your focus from the rest of the exam, yet NCLEX is timed.

Conclusion

If you ask, “Is the NCLEX timed? Yes, the NCLEX RN examination is timed, and candidates have five hours to complete the NCLEX, passing the NCLEX in a timed environment requires both preparation and strategy. Investing in a good study guide is crucial, as it will help you practice under exam-like conditions. With time management being key, aim to spend around 60 seconds per question and be mindful not to get stuck—if a question takes more than 2 minutes, make an educated guess and move on.

It’s important to remember that the NCLEX is adaptive, so the difficulty of questions will change based on your performance, which is a normal part of the test. Since the exam operates on one-way traffic, you cannot revisit previous questions, so be sure of your answers before submitting them. By understanding these aspects and staying calm under pressure, you’ll give yourself the best chance to succeed.
