Family and Caregiver Support

- Family and caregiver support is a vital part of end-of-life care and palliative care that recognizes the impact of serious or terminal illnesses on the family system and the role of family members and caregivers in providing care and comfort to the patients.

- Family and caregiver support includes assessing the needs, strengths, and resources of the family and caregivers, such as:

  • their physical, emotional, social, financial, and spiritual well-being,

  • their coping skills,

  • their knowledge and skills in caregiving,

  • their availability and willingness to provide care,

  • their access to support services or respite care.

- Family and caregiver support also includes providing education, guidance, assistance, encouragement, recognition, and appreciation to the family and caregivers, as well as involving them in decision-making, care planning, and care delivery.

- Family and caregiver support also includes addressing the potential challenges, risks, and burdens of caregiving, such as caregiver stress, burnout, fatigue, depression, anxiety, isolation, guilt, resentment, grief, or compassion fatigue.
