Symptom Management in Palliative Care

- Symptom management is a major aspect of palliative care, as it aims to relieve physical discomfort and improve functional status and quality of life for patients with serious or life-threatening illnesses.

- Common symptoms that require management in palliative care include:

  • Pain

  • Dyspnea (shortness of breath)

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Anorexia or cachexia (loss of appetite or weight)

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Anxiety or depression

  • Delirium or confusion

- Symptom management strategies include:

  • Assessing the type, intensity, frequency, duration, location, and impact of symptoms using standardized tools, such as numerical rating scales, visual analog scales, faces pain scales, etc.

  • Identifying and treating the underlying causes of symptoms when possible, such as infections, obstructions, bleeding, etc.

  • Using pharmacological interventions, such as opioids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, anticholinergics, antiemetics, laxatives, etc., according to the principles of pain management (by mouth if possible; by clock; by ladder; for individual; with attention to detail)

  • Using nonpharmacological interventions, such as relaxation techniques, massage therapy, music therapy, aromatherapy.
