Bandaging

- Bandaging is the process of applying a material or device to a wound or injured body part to protect it from further damage, promote healing, prevent infection, control bleeding, reduce swelling, provide support, or immobilize the area.

- Bandages can be classified into two main categories: dressings and binders.

  • Dressings are materials that are applied directly to the wound surface to absorb drainage, prevent contamination, and facilitate healing. They can be dry, moist, wet-to-dry, nonadherent, occlusive, or impregnated with substances such as antiseptics, antibiotics, or silver.
  • Binders are materials that are wrapped around a body part to hold a dressing in place, provide compression, support a weak or injured area, or shape a body contour. They can be elastic, inelastic, tubular, triangular, or circular.

- Bandaging is an essential skill for nurses who care for patients with wounds or injuries. It requires knowledge of wound assessment, bandage selection, application techniques, monitoring methods, and patient education.
