Mobility devices: crutches, canes, continuous passive ROM machine.

- Mobility devices are assistive devices that help patients with impaired mobility to move around independently or with minimal assistance. They include crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, scooters, and continuous passive ROM (range of motion) machines. Mobility devices can improve the quality of life, functional status, and psychological well-being of patients with mobility impairments. They can also prevent complications such as pressure ulcers, contractures, muscle atrophy, venous stasis, and respiratory infections.

- Mobility devices are prescribed by a physician or a physical therapist based on the patient’s condition, needs, goals, and preferences. The type and size of the device should be appropriate for the patient’s height, weight, strength, balance, coordination, and comfort. The device should also be compatible with the patient’s environment and lifestyle.

- The nurse plays an important role in assessing the patient’s mobility status, teaching the patient how to use the device correctly and safely, monitoring the patient’s progress and response to the device, and preventing or managing any complications or problems related to the device.
