Types of Bandages

- There are many types of bandages available for different purposes and situations. Some of the common ones are:

  • Gauze: A thin, woven fabric that is used to cover wounds or hold dressings in place. It can be sterile or nonsterile, plain or impregnated with substances such as petrolatum or zinc oxide. It can also be used to pack wounds or apply pressure to bleeding areas.
  • Elastic: A stretchable fabric that is used to provide compression or support to a body part. It can be adhesive or nonadhesive, cohesive or noncohesive. It can also be used to reduce edema or prevent venous stasis.
  • Muslin: A cotton fabric that is used to make straps or slings for traction or immobilization. It can also be used to shape body contours such as breasts or abdomen.
  • Outing flannel: A soft fabric that is used to provide warmth and comfort to a body part. It can also be used to prevent skin irritation from other bandages.
  • Tubular: A cylindrical fabric that is used to cover fingers, toes, arms, legs, or other tubular structures. It can be elastic or inelastic, knitted or woven. It can also be used to hold dressings in place or provide mild compression.
  • Triangular: A triangular-shaped fabric that is used to make slings for arm injuries or splints for finger injuries. It can also be used to cover head wounds or apply pressure to bleeding areas.
  • Circular: A circular-shaped fabric that is used to cover circular structures such as eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or anus. It can also be used to hold dressings in place or provide mild compression.
