Types of Enteral Nutrition

- EN formulas vary in their composition, osmolality, caloric density, fiber content, and protein quality.

- EN formulas can be classified into four main types:

  • Standard or polymeric formulas: These contain intact proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that require normal digestion and absorption. They provide 1 to 1.5 kcal/mL and are suitable for most patients with normal or mildly impaired GI function. Examples include Ensure, Isocal, and Osmolite.
  • Hydrolyzed or elemental formulas: These contain predigested proteins (peptides or amino acids), carbohydrates (glucose or maltodextrin), and fats (medium-chain triglycerides) that require minimal digestion and absorption. They provide 1 to 1.5 kcal/mL and are suitable for patients with impaired GI function or malabsorption. Examples include Peptamen, Vivonex, and NutriHep.
  • Disease-specific formulas: These are designed to meet the special nutritional needs of patients with specific diseases or conditions. They may have modified amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, or other nutrients. Examples include Nepro (for renal disease), Glucerna (for diabetes), Pulmocare (for respiratory disease), and Impact (for trauma or surgery).
  • Modular formulas: These are single-nutrient preparations that can be added to other formulas or foods to increase the caloric or protein content. They may contain protein (ProMod), carbohydrates (Polycose), fats (Microlipid), or fiber (Benefiber).
