How Many Questions Are On The PN-NCLEX Exam?

how-many-questions-are-on-the-pn-nclex-exam

Are you a nursing student or thinking of becoming one? Then, you will soon be encountering the term PN-NCLEX. NCLEX refers to the name of the  nursing examination  you will have to pass before receiving your license as a professional nurse. Furthermore, the NCLEX exam helps verify that a nursing student has all the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively and safely practice all nursing duties. The NCLEX-PN is a candidate’s exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). LPNs refer to nurses who provide basic medical care, monitor patients, and report patient status and concerns to Registered Nurses (RNs) and doctors. This article will answer the question, “How many questions are on the PN-NCLEX Exam?”

How Many Questions Are On The PN-NCLEX Exam?

The  National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN)  administers two National Council Licensure Examinations. One helps determine whether a nursing student qualifies to be a registered nurse (RN) or a practice nurse (PN).

The NCLEX-RN can have a maximum of 145 questions, while the NCLEX-PN contains up to 205 questions. Additionally, not all individuals taking the NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN exams will answer all possible questions. However, all examinees must answer a minimum number of test questions during their testing period.

The NCLEX-RN exam takers will have to answer at least 75 questions, while those taking the NCLEX-PN have to complete at least 85 questions. The number of questions a test-taker might have to answer varies because of the test’s design.

How Computerized Testing System Works

The testing process is customized to each individual. When a test-taker answers a question, the computer program used for NCLEX tests determines whether the answer is correct or wrong. When the answer is correct, the next question the test-taker will encounter will be a little bit harder. If the answer is not correct, then the next question will be a little bit easier.

As a test-taker progresses through a test, the computer system evaluates the exam-taker answers. The test will end when an exam taker answers enough questions for the system to determine within 95% certainty that the exam taker has met or fallen short of the passing standard.

Exam takers who answer many questions correctly early on will handle fewer questions. However, those who answer many questions incorrectly will have to tackle all the questions.

The NCLEX PN Test Content

The NCLEX tests determine if an individual can apply medical knowledge in practical situations when caring for patients. It is not enough that an individual has mastered medical definitions and knows the name of every bone in the human body; these tests determine if a person can use this knowledge to effectively do the  types of tasks that nurses regularly perform .

Moreover, the NCLEX exam comprises eight areas that test an individual’s relevant knowledge and skills. The number of questions from each area may vary, depending on how successfully an individual answers other questions in that content area.

The table below highlights the content areas and how much the exam typically focuses on each.

Time Allocation for the Tests

Individuals taking the NCLEX-RN have up to 6 hours to complete their exam, while those taking the NCLEX-PN will receive up to 5 hours.

These time allotments include instruction time before answering questions and the time given for any breaks during the testing period. It is possible to complete the test in as little as 2 hours. Furthermore, the amount of time needed will depend, in part, on how many questions individuals answer and whether they had a high success rate with their answers.
