This describes a durable power of attorney for healthcare (also called a healthcare proxy). That document designates a specific person to make healthcare decisions on the client’s behalf if they become unable to do so.

A living will does not typically list specific medications. Instead, it outlines general preferences about accepting or refusing life-sustaining treatments and interventions.

This example reflects fidelity, not autonomy. Fidelity refers to keeping promises and maintaining trust in the nurse–client relationship. While important for ethical practice, it does not involve the client actively making a decision about their care.

This reflects beneficence, which means acting in the best interest of the client and promoting good. Individualizing care is excellent nursing practice, but unless the client is actively making the decision, it does not specifically demonstrate autonomy.

This action demonstrates beneficence (relieving pain) and possibly nonmaleficence (preventing harm from unmanaged pain). However, simply administering medication according to schedule does not necessarily show that the client exercised decision-making authority.

This represents vertical conflict (higher authority to lower authority) and possibly poor leadership, but it is not lateral violence because the individuals are not at the same organizational level.

This is not lateral violence because the nurse manager holds a higher position in the hierarchy. This situation reflects unprofessional behavior but not horizontal aggression between peers.

This is an example of vertical violence, as it involves someone in a position of authority (charge nurse) mistreating a subordinate (AP). Lateral violence specifically occurs between colleagues of equal status.

While cultural considerations are important, the question focuses on why the nurse personally would experience difficulty, not the family’s cultural values. Cultural conflicts may affect care planning, but they are not the source of personal difficulty in this context.

Parents of an 18-year-old do not have automatic legal authority over the adult child’s healthcare decisions unless the patient has a documented inability to make decisions (e.g., via a healthcare proxy). Since the patient is comatose and the parents are likely the legal decision-makers under state law, legality is not the primary barrier.

While end-of-life care can involve ethical considerations, the question specifically asks why the nurse would personally have difficulty implementing the intervention. Recognizing an ethical issue does not inherently prevent the nurse from carrying out care; personal values are the key factor.

Autocratic leaders make decisions independently and expect strict compliance. While this style can be effective in emergencies requiring rapid decisions, it does not encourage adaptability or staff input, making it less suitable for a constantly changing care environment.

While a good rapport is beneficial for care, it is not a formal criterion in the five rights of delegation. Rapport does not ensure safe or competent task performance.

Prioritization is a nursing judgment skill that typically remains the responsibility of the licensed nurse. APs may follow instructions but are not usually expected to independently prioritize tasks outside their scope.

While independence can be desirable, the five rights emphasize competence and appropriate supervision, not whether the AP can complete the task entirely alone. Nurses are responsible for providing oversight and evaluation as needed.

This leadership style is hands-off. Leaders provide minimal guidance and allow team members to make decisions independently. It does not involve clear directions or strong control.

Transformational leaders inspire, motivate, and engage staff in shared decision-making and innovation. They focus on vision and collaboration rather than unilaterally making decisions.

Democratic leaders involve team members in decision-making, encourage input, and promote collaboration. This style is participatory, not directive.

The Code does not provide technical instructions or procedural steps; those are outlined in institutional policies or clinical guidelines.

While nurses’ personal values may align with the Code, it represents a profession-wide standard rather than individual beliefs.

Although the Code reflects a nurse’s commitment to ethical practice, its primary purpose is practical guidance for ethical behavior, not simply a declaration of dedication.
