Administering a medication without a prescription is outside the nurse’s scope of practice. In addition, not all diuretics lower potassium; some, such as potassium-sparing diuretics, can actually worsen hyperkalemia. Interventions must be based on assessment and provider orders.

Communication and dissemination of findings occur later in the EBP process, after evidence has been collected, appraised, implemented, and evaluated. Sharing information without first validating it through research could contribute to misinformation or ineffective practice.

Evaluation is one of the final steps of evidence-based practice and is used to determine whether the implemented change improved patient outcomes, quality of care, or efficiency. Evaluation cannot occur until after the practice change has been implemented.

Expert opinion is based on clinical experience rather than research evidence. While valuable in practice, it ranks lowest on the evidence hierarchy due to the high risk of bias and lack of systematic evaluation.

CAM therapies are generally used as adjuncts to conventional medicine, not as complete replacements. Advising that acupuncture or other CAM treatments can replace essential medical care would be unsafe and misleading.

CAM therapies, including acupuncture, do not guarantee relief for all patients or conditions. Outcomes vary based on the individual, condition, and practitioner skill. Making such claims would be inaccurate and potentially dangerous.

Acupuncture and similar CAM therapies are generally low-risk when performed by trained practitioners.
